1837 1C Plain Cords, Medium Letters, N-3, R.1, MS64 Brown NGC. Our EAC Grade MS62. Bluish-steel toning and faded mint red are evident on both sides of this satiny Mint State cent. Low areas on the jaw and neck, and inside the top of the wreath, are as struck. Variety: A plentiful variety from the early head style with plain hair cords. This early die state piece shows full obverse and reverse border dentilation, with the usual reverse die crack seen on all known examples. Population Data (4/15): For the date, dozens of finer examples appear at each service, but the certified populations thin out markedly above the Gem grade level. Heritage Commentary: Bill Noyes agrees with our grade of MS62 and records this piece in the 12th position in his 2005 Census. Provenance: ANA Sale (Federal Brand, 8/1964), lot 175; Stack's (5/1975), lot 580; Stack's (3/1997), lot 228.
