1840 1C Large Date, N-6, R.1, MS65 Red and Brown NGC. CAC. Our EAC Grade MS64. An impressive Gem exhibiting considerable orange mint luster on the obverse and about half the mint color on the reverse. The balance is toned to medium bluish-steel brown. A lovely cent showing full cartwheel luster. Variety: The date has 40 recut left of the upright of the 4 and inside the right curve of the 0. Grellman Die State b with a short point to the left from star 13. Population Data (3/15): NGC reports eight MS65 Red and Brown, four MS65 Red, nine MS66 Brown, and three MS66 Red and Brown, including all Small Date and Large Date varieties. Heritage Commentary: The Naftzger Collection included an MS66 Brown PCGS coin that Bob Grellman called MS64 and placed third in his late date census. Provenance: Purchased from Jim McGuigan (11/1998).
