1847 1C N-1, R.2, MS65 Brown PCGS. CAC. Our EAC Grade MS63. Although PCGS has designated this Gem as Brown, approximately 20% of the original orange mint color remains on each side. The balance is pleasing medium olive with delicate blue overtones. The pristine surfaces exhibit bold details and full cartwheel luster. Variety: The boldly repunched date of 1847 N-1 displays remnants of the original date at the lower left of each digit. This variety is different from the 1847 over Small 7 variety listed in the Guide Book. Grellman Die State c, a late state showing extensive reverse die cracks. Population Data (3/15): For all 1847 varieties, PCGS data report 40 MS65 Brown (one MS65+ Brown) with eight numerically finer in all color designations. CAC shows 19 in MS65 Brown and four finer Brown coins. Heritage Commentary: This example is high in the Condition Census for 1847 N-1, equal to the MS63 Naftzger coin, which Bob Grellman called tied for second finest known. Provenance: Bowers and Merena (3/2010), lot 154; purchased from Legend Numismatics (3/9/2010).
