8/28/2020The 1792 Morris "So-Called" Silver Center Cent
This presentation by Rob Rodriguez covers the major elements of a 50 page analysis challenging the authenticity of the silver plug in the 1792 Morris Silver Center Cent Judd-1. It is among the most extensive investigations conducted on a 1792 pattern coin to date. The primary research conclusion, the silver plug being a fabrication created AFTER the coin was produced and emitted from the US Mint, is publicly supported by a wide array of numismatic experts. The U.S. Government has declared that certain coins are illegal to own, most famously the 1933 Double Eagle, but potentially many others as well. Foreign governments say that coins constituting "cultural property" may be subject to confiscation even if they are held in other countries. A study on the tradition of coins used in the ancient world related to death experience. This presentation will explore relevant customs in different locations and eras of the ancient world. Cases of archaeological findings will be presented supported with rich photographic evidence. Presenting: Dr. George Anastasopoulos, who is a Mechanical Engineer with an MSc and a PhD in Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois with extended experience is testing and characterization of materials. He is the Vice President of the International Accreditation Service (IAS), a global accreditation body headquartered at Brea, California. He is a coin collector since his early youth with emphasis to ancient Greek and Byzantine Period coins. He is member of American Numismatic Society (ANS), American Numismatic Association (ANA), Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), Numismatic Association of Southern California (NASC) and Ancient Coin Club of Los Angeles (ACCLA). 8/28/2020Walking Liberty Half Dollar Proofs, the 20th Century's Most Underappreciated and Undervalued Series
This presentation will discuss the origin of Adolf Weinman's famous (to this day) obverse, and note the annual mintage of Walking Liberty Proofs, some of the lowest in all of the 20th Century. In 1936, a mere 3,901 pieces were struck. The entire seven-year production was just 74,400, yet high-grade Walker proofs are relatively affordable. Major varieties are not even recognized by PCGS, or in the Cherry Pickers Guide, 6th Edition, Vol 1. The 1941 "No-AW" is a prime example. Confusion reigns! 8/28/2020The Other Continental Dollar: Dickeson's Continental Currency Commemoratives
Numismatic common knowledge historically has attributed Dickeson's Continental Currency so-called dollar to the 1876 U.S. Centennial Exposition. Research facilitated by the Newman Numismatic Portal allowed William Hyder and Jeff Shevlin to place its creation in the period between 1861 and 1862 as one of four medals likely engraved and struck by Robert Lovett, Jr. for Dickeson in support of the Union financing for the Civil War. A common metaphor to describe the newly independent United States was "a new constellation." Robert Morris used the phrase, in Latin, on his proposed coinage for the newly independent states. While researching in the General Archive of the Indies for the elusive 1766 paper money of Puerto Rico, Angel O. Navarro Zayas uncovered previously unreported paper money of Louisiana and Puerto Rico during the late 18th century. The findings have been published in the Journal Documenta & Instrumenta (2014), The Numismatist (2018), and Journal of Early American Numismatics (2019). Presenting: Angel O. Navarro Zayas, who is a numismatist and Puerto Rican historian, for 15 years. In 2005, he participated in ANA Summer Seminar, with Mr. John Kraljevich and Mr. Charlie Davis as mentors. He has published at The Numismatist (ANA), at the Journal of Early American Numismatics (ANS), Numiexpo Magazine published annually by the Puertorican Numismatic Society; at the Documenta & Instrumenta Journal published by the Universidad Complutense de Madrid; he has also published columns at the major newspaper in Puerto Rico El Nuevo Dia. He also has published numerous books on Puerto Rican numismatics at Lulu Press. The article "Spanish Colonial Paper Money in Puerto Rico and New Orleans," which appeared in the 2018 volume of The Numismatist, was selected by a panel of judges to receive the third-place Catherine Sheehan Literary Award for U.S. Paper Money Studies. Also on May, 2020 he received the honor of being the first Puertorican and Hispanic to receive the EPNNES research grant - Eric P. 8/30/2020Almost as Rare as an 1804 Dollar: The Rare First Printing of The Fantastic 1804 Dollar
In August 1962, at the Detroit ANA convention, the King of Siam set was first revealed to the public. This discovery led researchers to the origin of the 1804 dollar, which at that time remained a matter of longstanding speculation. The King of Siam set demonstrated that these coins were first struck in the 1830s as diplomatic gifts. Separately, Eric P. Newman and Ken Bressett had been working on The Fantastic 1804 Dollar and intended to release copies of the book at the same ANA convention. When David Spink and James Risk announced the startling discovery of the King of Siam set, Ken Bressett immediately dispatched a "stop the presses" call to Whitman Publishing. The book was quickly revised, but a small number of the first printing survived, and these today are avidly collected by numismatic bibliophiles. Presenting: Joel J. Orosz and Len Augsburger. 8/30/2020Award Medals from the California State Fair and their Precursors
The first agricultural fairs in California, organized by Colonel J.L.L.F. Warren in 1852, set the stage for the formation of the California State Agricultural Society and its State Fair which continues to this day. Colonel Warren, following his New England background in such fairs, awarded medals to worthy exhibitors in his two early fairs. Likewise, the State Agricultural Society awarded actual prize medals from 1858 until the mid-1970s in a wide variety of designs, sizes and metals. In this presentation, Dr. Michael F. Wehner will discuss the development of these medals and the symbolism of their varying designs. Wehner is past president of the Pacific Coast Numismatic Society. J.S.G. Boggs was one of the most interesting artists of the 20th century. Fascinated with the concept and form of money, he was both a fine artist and performance artist who danced in the grey area between imitation, satire, and counterfeiting. Arrested for and acquitted of counterfeiting in England and Australia, his Pittsburgh studio and office were raided by the U.S. Secret Service in an eerie parallel to the 1886 arrest of noted photorealistic painter William Harnett, whose paintings of paper money drew official scrutiny.
