Cornelius Clarkson Vermeule
Biography
Born in South Orange, New Jersey. Served in the U. S. Army 1943 to 1947. Married Emily Dickinson Townsend February 2, 1957. (She died in 2001) They had a son and a daughter. Archer Milton Huntington and Anna Hyatt Huntington were his wife’s great aunt and uncle. Received A.B. from Harvard in 1949 and M.A. in 1951. Received Ph.D. from University of London in 1953. Assistant professor at the University of Michigan 1953 to 1955. Assistant professor at Bryn Mawr 1955 to 1957.
Curator for classical art at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston after 1957. Acting director of the museum 1972 to 1973. Associate curator for coins for the Massachusetts Historical Society 1965 to 1971. Curator after 1971. Author of works on ancient coins.
Author of several works on foreign coinage. Author of A Bibliography of Applied Numismatics in 1956. Author of Numismatic Art in America, Aesthetics of the United States Coinage in 1971. Fellow of the ANS for life. His collection was scheduled for an auction on September 11, 2001. After terrorist attacks this was rescheduled for November 12-13.
He died in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
